My History with Journalism
In 2014, during my sophomore year at Seminole High School I joined the school newspaper and yearbook. Being a part of The Seminole Newspaper and the Salmagundi staff allowed me to explore my love for communications and storytelling. After I joined the publications, I documented moments and memories through photography, learned how to write articles and explored using Adobe Software.
During my year on staff, the yearbook published volume 106 of Salmagundi. The book won many awards, including All-Florida Rating by Florida Scholastic Press Association, First-Class Rating by National Scholastic Press Association, and the Gold Medalist Columbia Student Press Association. After one year on the yearbook staff, I decided to dedicate my attention solely to The Seminole Newspaper and become a full-time Newsie.
At the end of my junior year, my English teacher supported my decision to apply for the position of Editor-in-Chief of The Seminole Newspaper – a position which I was granted. During my year as EIC of the Seminole Newspaper, I was in charge of a staff of 16 students. Together, we published many photo galleries and articles. We also produced the first print publication for the paper after it being fully online for several years. This year on staff truly assured me that I wanted a career as a journalist.
My first year in college at Florida International University, I immediately joined FIU Student Media to write for the newspaper publication PantherNOW as an opinion writer. At the end of my first year on staff, I was awarded, “2018 Best Opinion Writer.” I went on to work with several publications while at FIU, including, Inspicio, ArtBurst, the Miami Times, CADA. I covered arts, entertainment, politics, and health.
I have gained valuable leadership skills by working as the editor-in-chief of the Seminole Newspaper, promotions and recruitment director for Florida International University (FIU) Student Media, executive producer of the SFMN show South Florida Access and chapter president of the Phi Gamma chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority, Inc.
My experiences have prepared me for a life as a storyteller and artist.
