Okahumpka Community Club aims to educate the community about the school’s history

It’s believed that it takes a village to raise a child.

The motto is meant to encourage the wholistic investment in the development and safety of children.

That belief led two men, Booker T. Washington and Julius Rosenwald, to build over 5,300 schools across 15 states over the span of 20 years, including in Florida.

Now a village has formed to raise and preserve the remnants of the state’s historical landmark in Lake County.

The Okahumpka Community Club hosted the “Okahumpka: The Restoration of the Historic Rosenwald School” presentation on Friday at the Leesburg Public Library. The presentation, led by club member Barbara Goldberg, included historical photos and videos to ignite dialog about the school and its importance.

Students were educated at the Okahumpka Rosenwald School from 1930 to 1964. Many Rosenwald schools in the nation closed after integration laws were passed regarding education in 1954.
