Wildwood offers square dance lessons

Breaking down the moves for guests, The Villages Squares club is teaching square dance lessons with class levels including mainstream/beginner and plus.

There is even a session for those who are disabled.

“I thought this was a great opportunity to have more people square dancing,” said The Villages Squares club founder Judith Mason, of the Village of Osceola Hills.

The lessons are hosted by the Wildwood Parks and Recreation Department, but are taught by The Villages Squares. Sessions run through Dec. 17 at the Warfield Auditorium, 98 S. Warfield Ave. in Wildwood. The club offers an engaging activity to those living in Wildwood and surrounding areas.

The club focuses on using square dancing to create friendship, fun and fitness.

“I see square dancing as a very healthy activity,” Mason said. “It’s wonderful for the body. Square dancing is equivalent of walking two to three miles, but you’re inside so it makes the surroundings more comfortable.”

Mason said square dancing is also good for the mind and gives people a chance to exercise with people who have similar interests.

“It’s extremely good for the brain and memory because you have to know 100 calls, or specific movements, and be able to do them when the caller says them,” Mason said. “I want to keep my memory as sharp as possible.”
