At 23 years old, Alauna Mobley is breaking into the art world with full force.
The young artist — whose work mixes realism and cartoon-style art to create characters — has scheduled shows and events for her art for the rest of the year. Several shows are in locations out of state, including New York and New Orleans.
“These shows will also be my first time traveling out of a state for an exhibit. I am so excited to be able to show other states my work,” Mobley said.
The first time Mobley can recall herself drawing was back in kindergarten.
“Throughout the rest of my academic years, I would constantly draw on tests and homework because it made me feel happy,” she said, adding that it wasn’t until 2020 that she tried her current favorite medium, acrylic painting.
Mobley only attended art classes in middle school and for one year in high school but uses her passion and inspiration from other artists as motivation to create.
“I wish I did more. If I would’ve had art classes all throughout high school, the skills I’ve acquired now would’ve been far exceeded. But instead of being upset with that, I take it as character development,” she said.
“Since I don’t have the assistance a school requires, everything I learn is because of my passion for art. That alone reminds me of how much I want this to be my career,” Mobley said. “Learning how to make any color with just the primary colors was an exciting thing for me and it motivated me to keep practicing and getting the skin tones more accurate each time.”
Mobley looks up to a lot of artists, but her favorite is Jae Daisey (@thejaedaisy).
“Seeing her work for the first time back in 2021 really reminded me of how I wanted my art to be in the future,” she said. “How elegant her ladies look and how they blended in with the nature behind them was always beautiful to me.”
Mobley finds herself switching art styles constantly because sometimes she feels like a change is needed.
“To be truthful, I am not sure how to describe my style,” she said. “I love the big eyes and the big lips. But i also love the details of realism, like knowing how the lights and shadows of the face can affect the shapes it holds.”
The big eyes and big lip characteristics are shown in one of Mobley’s favorite pieces, “Let That Man-go.” Her latest painting, “Down with the Blues,” is another one of her personal favorites.
“[’Down with the Blues’] is the first time I have painted my feelings onto a canvas. It felt so relieving to be able to use what I love as an outlet,” said Mobley, whose goal is to become a full-time artist.
“Soon, I want to mix in other mediums like being a tattoo artist and/or making miniatures,” she said. She also wants to “sell clothing with my work on it, teach others how to use art as an expressive outlet, and maybe even one day own a studio for yoga, music, and art.”
Mobley’s upcoming show dates are ArtWalk Orlando – September 23, Pancakes & Booze Orlando- Oct. 6, BLACKARTMATTERS Pop Up Brooklyn- Oct. 28 and Pancakes & Booze Dallas – Nov. 3.
