HISPANIC WOMEN SHOULDN’T BE OVERSEXUALIZED

In today’s society, men oversexualize women for specific stereotypical characteristics or traits.

For white women it’s obedience, for black women its sex and for Hispanic women, it’s their attitudes. Hispanic women are often thought of as being “spicy” or sassy because of the way they are portrayed in the media.

This stereotype towards Latinas has created unrealistic goals that all Hispanic women feel they must live up to. They’re expected to get upset at the drop of a dime and be loud and yelling all the time.

I saw a post on Twitter that showed a photo of a female demon putting on makeup.

Someone quoted the tweet and said, “this is Latinas getting ready. F–king demons.”

This post has gone viral and has over 50 thousand likes, which means most if not all of those people agree with what was said.

That’s a problem.

Along with a temper, Latinas are expected to have a perfect bombshell body and are perceived as sexual icons.

This can cause women to feel as if they have no choice but to be angry or that their attitudes are associated with their sex appeal.

Because of this, men get the idea that all Hispanic women have a wild side and a hyper-sexual desire that needs to be checked.

It’s an extreme ego boost for men if they’re able to “tame” and be an assertive authority figure.

When Hispanic women don’t have the spicy attitude the world associates them with, they get misplaced into a different category whether they like it or not.

All of these stereotypes make Hispanic women who don’t fit into this category feel left out and like they don’t belong. This feeling can also cause mental insecurities in young women who have yet to become comfortable with themselves.

Men need to understand and accept that there is no one specific type of Latina. If the common stereotypes are what turn you on or make Hispanic women your type, then you need a reality check.

Latinas should take time to get comfortable in the skin they’re in. They shouldn’t let Twitter posts, a man or anyone tell them that there is only one way to be a Hispanic woman.

There’s no one type of Latina. These stereotypes are extremely baseless and need to be abandoned.

And when someone makes an ignorant comment about Hispanic women or the way they are “supposed” to be, correct them.

Don’t suffer in silence because you fear becoming the spicy latina stereotype that you were offended by in the first place.

Speak up.
